Danger Signs

Properly installed appliances that are checked regularly by Madigas a CORGI Registered Installers should be safe. However, if you notice any of the following telltale danger signs, you should switch off the appliance immediately and notify your registered installer.

(i) Sooting around the appliance

(ii) A yellow or orange lazy flame

(iii) Excessive condensation in the room where the appliance is installed

If you suspect a gas leak or an escape of gas, call the Transco 24-hour emergency service on 0800 111 999.

If you are concerned about the quality of the work that has been carried out by your gas installer then you can make a complaint on 0870 401 2300 and we will endeavour to investigate.

Physical symptoms of Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning

If you experience drowsiness, headaches, nausea or pains in the chest when using a gas appliance, switch it off immediately, contact a doctor and mention the possibility of CO poisoning.

The Danger Signs

This gas fire shows clear signs of distress as a result of both age and inadequate servicing. The signs to look for are the discolouration at the bottom of the fire and ‘yellowing' of the white ceramic radiant’s

This gas fire again has obvious signs of distress. There are black marks caused by products of combustion (fumes) that have failed to exit the appliance via the flue (or chimney) on both the gas fire and the wall immediately above. When the appliance was removed from the flue, the space immediately behind it was found to be full of debris such as leaves and twigs. This stopped the flue operating correctly and would possibly have caused carbon monoxide to be produced. These photographs show the importance of having a gas appliance checked on a regular basis, normally every 12 months.

This photograph shows a modern gas fire that is designed to look like a ‘real fire'. This means that the flames would normally show some signs of yellow instead of the normal blue. This makes it difficult to tell if the appliance is burning correctly or not. However, with this gas fire, the danger signs are that the flames are elongated and orange in appearance. There is also a build up of soot on the back of the appliance that should not happen with a gas appliance.

The gas boiler shown in this photograph again has black marks on the white case indicating that the products of combustion (fumes) are not being correctly removed.
